Freetown, Sierra Leone, Tuesday 24 July 2018 – Chief Justice of Sierra Leone, Abdulai Hamid Charm, has presented Justice Kekura Bangura to President Julius Maada Bio as the country’s first judge to the sub regional Court of Justice in Abuja, Nigeria for the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
The Chief Justice said he was very pleased to see a Sierra Leonean at the pinnacle of the justice system in the region, adding that: “I have no doubt that Justice Bangura will make the judiciary here and Sierra Leoneans very proud on his new assignment in Nigeria”.
Justice Bangura, who will take the oath of office on 30 July this year, expressed gratitude to President Bio for allowing the selection stages to be free from political interference.
“I am humbled by your humility and fairness at all levels in this process. This shows how much you want every sector in the country to operate without being influenced,” he said.
President Bio congratulated Justice Kekura Bangura for making Sierra Leone proud and for helping to raise the profile of the judicial system in the country. He advised him to work hard and live up to the expectations of the nation and assured him of his continued support.
Established in 2001 the ECOWAS Court of Justice is an organ of ECOWAS, a regional integration community of 15-member states in Western Africa. It was created pursuant to the provisions of Articles 6 and 15 of the Revised Treaty of the regional bloc.
